BP Oil Reformer, Grangemouth
SCOPE: Demolition & Asbestos
PROJECT VALUE: Demolition: £450,000 / Asbestos: £115,000
This industrial demolition project stands out for the company’s impressive innovation in creating a range of solutions to its many complex demands. Works were conducted 24 hours a day, seven days a week during BP’s shut down operations. Unique lifting cages for the removal of three catalytic reformers, weighing up to 310 tonnes each, were designed and fabricated by the engineering team of H Smith (Engineers). These were subsequently patented.
Asbestos removal was also required, followed by total demolition, as works were conducted 24 hours a day, seven days a week during BP’s shut down operations. A 1500 tonne mobile crane was vital to operations.
At a later stage H Smith (Engineers) Ltd dealt with the asbestos lining and cristobalite contaminated brickwork under controlled conditions prior to demolition of the remaining reformer shells.
