Royal Devon & Exeter Chimney

Total demolition of 61m concrete incinerator chimney by silent means within a live hospital.

To achieve this, it was first envisaged to use state of the art hand held concrete crackers, however, the concrete proved too hard.

After scaffolding the chimney and installing a full height personnel hoist, we then suspended a 3½ tonne concrete cracker off a 200 tonne mobile crane to demolish the chimney.  This proved both successful and quick.

The works were complicated by the presence of problematic waste / residue within some of the five internal flues (i.e. hazardous waste that failed a WAC test).  This waste was sent off site for reprocessing.
